Delhi Airport unveils Air India Maharaja Lounge

Delhi’s primary international gateway has added a significant new premium facility with the launch of the Air India Maharaja Lounge at Terminal 3, signalling the airline’s intent to reposition its ground experience as part of a broader operational overhaul. The development reflects growing competition in airport infrastructure and rising expectations among international travellers transiting through the capital. 

Spanning nearly 16,000 square feet at the international pier of Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3, the Air India Maharaja Lounge has capacity for close to 300 passengers. The facility introduces tiered access for First and Business Class travellers, frequent flyer programme members and eligible alliance passengers, with phased entry beginning mid-February 2026. For Delhi Airport, which consistently ranks among India’s busiest aviation hubs, the addition of a flagship lounge underscores the commercial value of non-aeronautical infrastructure. Premium lounges are increasingly seen as revenue-generating assets that influence airline choice, route competitiveness and passenger dwell time within terminals.

The Air India Maharaja Lounge has been divided into multiple zones tailored to varied travel needs. Dedicated Business Class areas are complemented by a separate First Class section branded as Air India First. The layout incorporates workspaces with charging facilities and high-speed connectivity, quieter rest areas with enclosed recliners, and private sleep suites for long-haul passengers.
Design elements draw from the airline’s early aviation history, while integrating contemporary finishes. A themed bar space references the carrier’s inaugural 1930s operations, and curated beverage selections form part of the hospitality offering. Analysts note that such narrative-driven design aligns with a broader industry shift towards experiential airport architecture rather than purely functional spaces.

From an urban development perspective, investments of this scale contribute to Delhi’s positioning as a global transit node. Enhanced passenger facilities can strengthen the capital’s role in international business travel and tourism flows, sectors that feed into hospitality, commercial real estate and service employment ecosystems. Industry experts observe that as airlines modernise fleets and expand international routes, upgrading on-ground infrastructure becomes equally critical. Passenger experience now extends beyond in-flight service to include check-in efficiency, lounge comfort, digital connectivity and environmental standards. While specific sustainability benchmarks for the lounge have not been detailed publicly, newer airport facilities are increasingly expected to align with energy efficiency norms and responsible material use.

The launch of the Air India Maharaja Lounge marks the first in a planned network of upgraded lounges across domestic and overseas airports.
