Pune Region Neral Shirur Highway Plan Gains Approval

A proposed highway linking Raigad district with Pune’s eastern transport corridor has received preliminary approval from the Maharashtra government, signalling a new effort to reduce pressure on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway while improving regional connectivity. The Neral Shirur highway is expected to connect Karjat–Neral in Raigad with Shirur on the Pune–Ahilyanagar highway, creating an alternative route for intercity traffic and freight movement passing through the Pune metropolitan region. 

The proposal was reviewed by the state’s Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure during a meeting focused on large transport and urban development projects. Officials involved in the discussions indicated that the Neral Shirur highway could become a strategic bypass corridor for vehicles travelling between Mumbai, Pune and interior parts of Maharashtra. Pune’s growing economic role has intensified traffic demand on the Mumbai–Pune corridor. The city’s expanding technology parks, manufacturing clusters and logistics hubs generate significant daily movement of goods and commuters, placing sustained pressure on existing highway networks. Transport planners say new alternative routes are essential to distribute this traffic more efficiently across the region.

The Neral Shirur highway is expected to provide a direct connection between Raigad district and Pune’s eastern growth belt, which includes industrial zones and emerging residential corridors. By linking with the Pune–Ahilyanagar highway near Shirur, the route could help redirect long-distance freight and inter-district traffic that currently converges on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. Officials also discussed technical proposals for strengthening the Pune–Shirur corridor itself, where infrastructure planners are evaluating a combination of elevated six-lane stretches alongside ground-level carriageways. This corridor is increasingly important for the region’s industrial economy, particularly due to its proximity to manufacturing zones and logistics parks.
Urban mobility specialists note that infrastructure expansion in the Pune region must balance road development with broader transport planning. While new highways can improve freight efficiency and shorten travel times, sustainable urban growth requires parallel investments in public transport, rail connectivity and low-emission mobility systems.

The proposed corridor also reflects the emergence of a wider Mumbai–Pune–Nashik economic region, where infrastructure planning is increasingly being coordinated across districts to support trade, employment mobility and real estate development. Improved road connectivity could influence land use patterns in peri-urban areas around Pune, particularly along industrial and logistics corridors. Beyond transport projects, the infrastructure committee also reviewed civic development initiatives in other parts of the state, including the construction of a new legislative complex in Nagpur designed to accommodate future governance requirements. For Pune, however, the Neral Shirur highway represents a significant addition to the region’s transport planning agenda. If the project progresses through approvals and financing stages, it could provide an alternative mobility corridor that eases congestion on existing expressways while supporting the economic integration of Pune with surrounding districts.
