Kochi Metro Phase II Installs First U-Girder, Speeds Towards 2026

Kochi’s pursuit of a cleaner and more connected future received a major boost this week as Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) successfully installed the first U-shaped girder for its Phase II corridor. The 170-tonne segment was positioned with precision along the Infopark Expressway in Kakkanad, marking the start of elevated construction activity for the city’s next-generation mobility network.

The installation marks a symbolic step in Kerala’s ambition to advance sustainable urban transport solutions and ease congestion in one of the state’s fastest-growing technology and residential corridors. The structure was transported from KMRL’s Kalamassery casting yard using multi-axle trailers and lifted into place by heavy-duty cranes, showcasing the engineering precision involved in the city’s infrastructure transformation.Steady Construction Progress
According to project officials, 65 pillars near the proposed stations at SEZ, Alinchuvadu and Vazhakkala have already been completed, with 18 of them fitted with pier caps. Out of the total 1,135 piles required for the project, 875 are for the main viaduct, while the remaining 260 support the station foundations.

At the Kalamassery yard, production of U-girders, I-girders and pier caps continues on schedule, with over 100 of each type already completed.
Transformative Urban ConnectivityPhase II of the Kochi Metro extends over 11.17 kilometres from JLN Stadium in Kaloor to Infopark in Kakkanad. The line, estimated to cost ₹1,957 crore, will add 11 new elevated stations to the network. The first section is expected to be operational by mid-2026, with the entire stretch targeted for completion by the end of the same year.

Engineers involved in the project have stated that the corridor’s innovative design will reduce costs and construction complexities by aligning the up and down tracks along both sides of the existing Aluva corridor.
