Navi Mumbai Airport comes under CISF security cover with 900 personnel

Navi Mumbai has taken a major step towards ensuring passenger safety and operational readiness at its upcoming international airport, with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) formally assuming charge of airport security. The deployment, which began this week, marks the airport’s inclusion as the 71st facility under the CISF’s specialised Aviation Security Group (ASG) a milestone in India’s expanding aviation security architecture.

In the first phase, 900 personnel have been deployed out of a sanctioned strength of 1,840, with numbers set to scale up as passenger traffic and cargo operations grow. Officials confirmed that the induction process will continue in a phased manner over the next few months, aligning with the airport’s operational rollout.
The CISF’s responsibility extends across core and non-core security operations, including access control, perimeter protection, passenger and baggage screening, cargo handling, and management of specialised units such as Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS), and K9 units.

All security operations will adhere strictly to the latest Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) norms, ensuring compliance with international benchmarks.
According to senior officials, the induction of CISF is pivotal for the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), a project envisioned as a world-class greenfield aviation hub that complements the Mumbai airport and supports the region’s growing passenger demand. They noted that the CISF’s extensive experience in securing critical infrastructure will reinforce public confidence and strengthen India’s aviation resilience.

A senior security official described the takeover as “a commitment to deliver global-standard safety and passenger-friendly security systems from day one.” Meanwhile, airport management representatives highlighted that the move represents a major milestone in the airport’s readiness to welcome its first passengers, underscoring their commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and traveller trust.The induction ceremony, held earlier this week at the airport site, symbolically marked the handover of security command from the airport authorities to the CISF leadership. The event was attended by senior state and central officials, who reaffirmed the government’s dedication to maintaining a secure yet seamless travel experience.

Beyond its immediate operational role, the deployment of CISF also underscores India’s growing emphasis on resilient and secure transport systems that align with sustainable and smart city goals.
