Ahmedabad Subhash Bridge Closed After Structural Damage Traffic Diverted Alternative Routes

Ahmedabad’s Subhash Bridge over the Sabarmati River has been closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic after a portion of its span showed signs of structural settlement. The overpass, a key conduit into the city’s historic Kot area, is expected to remain inaccessible for at least five days as officials conduct detailed inspections using drones and boats. The closure has prompted significant traffic diversions across northern Ahmedabad.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has mobilised teams from its Bridge Project and Building Departments, supported by structural consultants, to carry out a comprehensive assessment. “Our immediate priority is to determine the extent of the damage and ensure public safety,” said an AMC official overseeing the inspection. The teams are examining cracks along the affected span and employing drone surveys to detect any internal structural gaps, while also evaluating surrounding sections for potential weaknesses.

The closure has shifted traffic onto alternative corridors, including the Dadhichi Bridge in Vadaj, which is now experiencing heightened congestion. Key pinch points have emerged at Ranip D-Mart, Vadaj Circle, and near the Dudheshwar Water Works. With ongoing construction at Vadaj Circle further constraining road capacity, commuters are advised to plan for additional travel time during peak hours.Detailed route plans have been shared by the AMC to help manage the flow of vehicles. Motorists travelling from Chandkheda and Sabarmati toward Delhi Darwaja, Shahibaug, and Civil Hospital can utilise Chimanbhai Patel Bridge, Prabodh Raval Circle, Ranip D-Mart, and Dadhichi Bridge. Those heading specifically to Civil Hospital are advised to take Bhat–Koteshwar Road via Indira Bridge and Airport Road. Commuters from Shahibaug can navigate via Namaste Circle, Devjipura, and Vadaj Circle to reach northern routes efficiently.
Industry experts note that while temporary bridge closures are disruptive, such inspections are essential for long-term urban resilience and safety. “Ensuring structural integrity is crucial not just for traffic management but for sustaining the city’s connectivity and supporting equitable access across neighbourhoods,” an urban infrastructure consultant observed.

The AMC has committed to continuous monitoring and timely updates for residents and commuters.
