Indian Railways Announces Passenger Fare Hike From December Twenty Six 2025

Indian Railways has announced a modest increase in passenger fares, effective from December 26, 2025, marking the second fare revision this year following an earlier hike in July. The adjustment, calculated on a per-kilometre basis, aims to partially offset rising operational and manpower expenses, which reached nearly ₹2.63 lakh crore in the 2024–25 financial year, according to industry sources. 

While suburban trains, short-distance general class journeys up to 215 km, and monthly season tickets remain unaffected, long-distance travellers will experience slight fare increases. Ordinary class passengers travelling beyond 215 km will see fares rise by 1 paisa per kilometre, while Mail/Express and AC class services, including premium trains such as Rajdhani Express, will increase by 2 paise per kilometre. For practical illustration, a journey from Bhopal to Delhi will cost approximately ₹14–16 more, and Delhi–Mumbai passengers can expect an additional ₹28. This translates to roughly ₹10 extra for every 500 km travelled in Express or AC coaches. Transport analysts note that while the hike is small, cumulative increases could affect frequent long-distance travellers.

Officials emphasise that the fare adjustment excludes reservation charges, superfast surcharges, or GST. The Railways expects the move to generate approximately ₹600 crore in additional revenue, which will be directed toward infrastructure improvements, enhanced safety measures, and service modernisation. An official from the Railways noted, “This measure ensures sustainable operations while maintaining affordability for most daily commuters.”
Urban mobility experts highlight that fare rationalisation is a common strategy for state-run transport networks facing escalating operational costs. With rising fuel, energy, and staffing expenditures, incremental adjustments help maintain service quality without imposing sudden financial burdens on the majority of passengers.
The revision also reflects Indian Railways’ efforts to balance fiscal sustainability with public service obligations.

By limiting fare increases to long-distance services and preserving unchanged rates for local and suburban commuters, authorities aim to safeguard equitable access to transport while addressing long-term operational funding gaps.  Passengers are advised to plan travel accordingly and book tickets after December 26 to accommodate the revised fare structure. Experts recommend that such marginal hikes, while manageable for most users, underline the importance of integrated urban transport policies that combine affordable fares with efficiency and environmental sustainability.
