Delhi is preparing to introduce a river-based leisure service on the Yamuna, with a pilot cruise project expected to become operational in the coming weeks. The initiative marks a notable shift in how the capital is attempting to reimagine its riverfront not merely as an environmental liability, but as a public asset capable of supporting tourism, recreation and economic activity alongside ongoing rejuvenation efforts. 

Officials associated with the project confirmed that a purpose-built passenger vessel is nearing completion and will be transported to the capital for final assembly and certification. Once operational, the service is expected to run on a fixed stretch of the Yamuna in north-east Delhi, offering short-duration leisure trips designed to combine sightseeing with cultural programming. For decades, the Yamuna has largely remained disconnected from daily urban life despite flowing through the heart of the city. Urban development experts argue that carefully managed riverfront activity can help reverse that disconnect by restoring public access, provided environmental safeguards and carrying capacity limits are built into operations from the outset.

The planned Yamuna cruise is part of a broader riverfront and tourism strategy that seeks to diversify Delhi’s visitor economy beyond monuments and malls. The one-hour service is expected to operate between two designated points, supported by newly developed jetties with passenger amenities and multimodal access. Officials indicate that coordination with city transport agencies is underway to ensure metro and bus connectivity, reducing reliance on private vehicles. From an infrastructure standpoint, the project reflects a growing interest in water-based mobility and recreation as cities search for lower-emission leisure options. While the cruise itself is positioned as a tourism offering, planners say it also functions as a proof-of-concept for activating urban waterways in a controlled, non-invasive manner.

The onboard experience is being designed as a blend of dining, open-deck seating and curated performances, drawing on Delhi’s cultural traditions. Beyond passenger services, the government is also examining the feasibility of limited water sports and designated recreation zones along the river.
