Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar underscored that despite a decade-long freeze in tariff adjustments, the current economic landscape necessitates a review.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shivakumar, also Bengaluru’s Development Minister, emphasized the operational challenges faced by BWSSB, attributing them to substantial losses incurred annually. Highlighting the board’s difficulty in securing financial support from banks amid ongoing infrastructure projects, he pointed to recent increases in fuel taxes as indicative of broader fiscal constraints faced by the state.<\/p>\n

“We are experiencing significant financial losses. Despite undertaking crucial projects, financial institutions are reluctant to extend support to BWSSB,” Shivakumar stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation. He further outlined that the completion of the fifth phase of the Cauvery project and additional allocations of 6 tmc ft of water to Bengaluru underscore the need for sustained financial stability within BWSSB.<\/p>\n

Shivakumar justified the potential tariff hike by referencing feedback from international financial bodies and internal committees, urging a strategic approach to bring BWSSB to a sustainable financial footing. He emphasized the necessity of expanding water distribution infrastructure and positioning BWSSB as an independent entity capable of achieving financial equilibrium.<\/p>\n

“We must demonstrate to stakeholders that BWSSB operates independently and efficiently,” Shivakumar stressed, underscoring the imperative of maintaining robust operational standards amid growing urban water demands.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Chief Minister affirmed that any decision regarding tariff adjustments will be preceded by a comprehensive financial assessment by BWSSB officials, ensuring transparency and public consultation. With discussions ongoing and imminent completion of critical projects, the Karnataka government aims to stabilize BWSSB’s financial health while navigating complex economic realities.<\/p>\n
