KOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is set to intensify its crackdown on illegal buildings across the city, following a directive to resume demolition operations after a hiatus of four months due to the Lok Sabha elections. The renewed effort comes in response to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent criticism of a racket involved in hazardous construction practices jeopardizing citizen safety.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An official from the KMC buildings department outlined the strategic overhaul, which includes augmenting the monthly demolition target from 150 to 200 unauthorized structures. A dedicated central squad will oversee and coordinate this initiative, stationed at the headquarters under the leadership of a deputy chief engineer. This team will collaborate closely with borough executive engineers, ensuring swift decision-making and operational efficiency during demolition activities.<\/p>\n

“In preparation for the expanded scope, KMC is enhancing its infrastructure with plans to possibly engage additional demolition agencies beyond the current four operating in 144 wards,” stated a senior executive engineer at KMC.
