In anticipation of the forthcoming Phase-2 expansion, the Chennai Metro Rail (CMR) has devised a flexible approach to accommodate varying passenger demands. While the initial plan for Phase-2 was to operate three-coach trains, CMR has now prepared the groundwork to couple two sets of three-coach trains, creating six-coach configurations when passenger demand surges.
\nPhase-2, encompassing a 116 km stretch with three distinct corridors, will see the operation of both three-coach and six-coach trains. Currently, the bidding process for this project is underway, with one contract already awarded.
\nThe decision to introduce flexible train configurations reflects the lessons learned from the unexpected surge in passenger numbers during Phase-1 and Phase-2 extension projects. Initially, CMR will introduce three-coach trains as part of the project’s launch.
