Navi Mumbai is taking steps towards implementation of the Slum
\nRehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme, with the initiation of a biometric
\nsurvey in the region’s slums. The SRA scheme aims to rehabilitate slum
\ndwellers by providing them with proper housing, benefiting an estimated 50,000
\nresidents.<\/p>\n
The survey commenced in the Chinchpada area of Airoli. A special programme
\nwas organised to familiarise slum dwellers with the process and reassure them
\nof the benefits of the scheme. The survey will account for hutments of slum
\ndwellers existing from pre-January 2000, which have been granted protection
\nunder the law and will receive free homes. It will also include hutments built up
\nto January 1, 2011, which will be eligible for homes with payment.<\/p>\n
The survey involves numbering houses, measuring their areas, collecting
\nfingerprints and photographs of residents using biometric systems, capturing
\nimages of entire families in front of their homes, and conducting videography of
\nthe location. Additionally, proof of residency will be collected to facilitate the
\nslum dwellers’ eligibility for the scheme.<\/p>\n
As the biometric survey progresses, Navi Mumbai remains committed to
\naddressing the housing needs of its slum dwellers. The SRA scheme aims to
\ntransform the lives of thousands of residents by providing them with proper
