She wore crisp cotton sarees and once carried the seal of the Indian Administrative Service.
\nBut in the dusty villages of Rajasthan, Aruna Roy found her true badge of honour \u2014 the voice of the people.<\/p>\n

When she resigned from the IAS in 1975, it wasn\u2019t to retire, but to rebel.
\nNot with rage, but with rights. Not with slogans, but with systems that could endure.<\/p>\n

What followed was one of India\u2019s greatest democratic revolutions from below \u2014 the Right to Information movement \u2014 a movement that forced the state to open its books and made transparency the people\u2019s constitutional weapon.<\/p>\n

From Power Corridors to Village Chaupals<\/h2>\n

Aruna Roy\u2019s journey is not just inspiring; it is counter-cultural.<\/p>\n

A St. Stephen\u2019s graduate and a civil servant in the 60s and 70s, she quickly realized the system was built to serve power, not people.
\nShe quit and moved to rural Rajasthan, living without electricity, water, or money, learning not to teach \u2014 but to listen.<\/p>\n

In Devdungri, she helped form the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS), a collective that fought for fair wages, transparency in accounts, and dignity of labour.<\/p>\n

And it was from a thatched-roof tent \u2014 not Parliament \u2014 that the slogan was born:<\/p>\n

\u201cHum Janenge, Hum Jeeyenge\u201d (We will know. We will live.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

RTI: A Law Forged in the Streets<\/h2>\n

The Right to Information wasn\u2019t drafted in law books.
\nIt was written in account books read under lantern light, on streets outside government offices, at protests where peasants asked to see how public funds were spent.<\/p>\n

Aruna Roy and MKSS turned that demand into a national movement, culminating in the RTI Act of 2005 \u2014 a gamechanger that empowered every Indian to question power.<\/p>\n
