For innovation rooted in tradition.<\/p>\n<p>And in doing so, he became a global symbol of how indigenous knowledge and modern science can work together to heal the Earth.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2>Education, Rewired<\/h2>\n<p>Before he was the \u201cIce Man,\u201d Wangchuk was already reshaping the system that failed him.<\/p>\n<p>In 1988, he co-founded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.secmol.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Students\u2019 Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL)<\/a> \u2014 a radical school for \u2018failed\u2019 students. At SECMOL, there were no rote exams. No rankings. Students learned by building solar\u2011heated buildings, managing farms, and running the campus themselves.<\/p>\n<p>It worked. SECMOL graduates became community leaders, engineers, and educators \u2014 all with a deep understanding of ecology, culture, and civic responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>His ideas later inspired Bollywood\u2019s iconic character \u201cPhunsukh Wangdu\u201d in *3 Idiots* \u2014 though his real\u2011life story is even more extraordinary.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2>Ice Stupas: Turning Melting Water Into Hope<\/h2>\n<p>As Ladakh\u2019s glaciers receded due to global warming, entire villages ran out of water by springtime \u2014 just when it was most needed.<\/p>\n<p>Wangchuk\u2019s revolutionary solution? Create artificial glaciers \u2014 called Ice Stupas \u2014 by freezing winter stream water vertically into towering conical structures that slowly melt in spring, supplying water when farmers need it most.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe can\u2019t bring back the lost glaciers.
