Mumbai Metro’s Line\u202f6 corridor has secured a landmark \u20b91,598.55\u2011crore contract for the design, manufacture, and delivery of 108 metro coaches, officials confirmed recently. Under the letter of acceptance issued by NCC Ltd on behalf of the MMRDA, Titagarh Rail Systems has been appointed to execute the project, including installation, testing, commissioning and long\u2011term maintenance.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Under the contract, 18 train sets of six coaches each will be built over a 104\u2011week design and manufacturing phase. This will be followed by a two\u2011year defect liability period and five years of compulsory comprehensive maintenance, aiming to ensure long-term reliability and asset performance. Revenue estimates place the unit cost per coach at \u20b910 to \u20b911 crore, depending on specifications. Margins are expected at 9\u201310\u202fper cent, with scope for improvement as Titagarh scales operations and advances its backward integration strategy. Mumbai Metro Line\u202f6, which runs from Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli along the Eastern Express Highway, is a critical east\u2011west corridor designed to ease congestion and expand transit coverage in the city\u2019s suburbs. The contract reinforces MMRDA\u2019s commitment to expansion of metro connectivity in alignment with sustainable urban mobility goals.<\/h4>\n

Titagarh Rail Systems, an Indian rolling stock manufacturer with prior experience supplying coaches to metro networks in Pune, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, is poised to expand its footprint under this order. The contract also reflects the government\u2019s broader Make in India thrust towards indigenously manufactured urban transit solutions. Financial analysts noted a positive market reaction to the deal, with Titagarh\u2019s share price surging over 2\u202fper cent following the announcement\u2014affirming investor confidence in the company\u2019s execution potential. For Mumbai commuters, the infusion of new rolling stock is expected to enhance capacity, improve onboard standards, and facilitate safer and more predictable travel. The trains will likely feature modern amenities aligned with global norms, such as fire safety systems, rider information displays, and efficient propulsion.<\/h4>\n

As the execution phase begins, key milestones include coach delivery, testing protocols at MMRDA depots, and alignment with signaling systems on Line\u202f6. Concurrently, authorities expect tight coordination with station works, track interface and commissioning schedules to ensure seamless integration. This deal strengthens the emerging urban transit ecosystem by prioritizing domestic manufacturing, operational assurance, and long-term service support.
