The initiatives include the doubling of the 141-kilometre Dwarka–Kanalus line in Gujarat and the addition of third and fourth lines on the 32-kilometre Badlapur–Karjat section of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Officials emphasise that these projects are part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to enhance capacity along high-traffic routes.

The Dwarka–Kanalus line upgrade is expected to improve access to the Dwarkadhish temple, a key pilgrimage site, while supporting industrial logistics across Saurashtra. The new tracks will accommodate increased freight volumes, including coal, salt, containers, and cement, with Indian Railways projecting an additional 11 million tonnes of freight movement annually. The development includes seven major and 143 minor bridges, representing an investment of Rs 1,457 crore, designed to integrate seamlessly with the region’s industrial hubs. In Maharashtra, the Badlapur–Karjat project is strategically positioned within the 88-kilometre Kalyan–Lonavala corridor, providing critical relief to the heavily trafficked Mumbai–Pune suburban network. Traversing Thane and Raigad districts, the 32-kilometre expansion is expected to increase commuter convenience and support a projected 7.2 million tonnes of additional freight annually. Infrastructure enhancements include eight major and 106 minor bridges, with Rs 1,324 crore earmarked for construction, half of which will be funded by the Maharashtra state government.

Urban planners note that the projects will not only decongest existing lines but also create more reliable transport links for industries and pilgrims, while facilitating smoother suburban commuting. “Doubling these lines addresses both capacity and resilience, enabling better passenger experiences and freight efficiency,” an official explained. Industry analysts highlight the potential economic impact of these upgrades. Enhanced rail connectivity is likely to attract additional commercial investment along the corridors, stimulate regional real estate development, and support sustainable urban growth by promoting rail over road transport. Freight efficiency improvements are particularly relevant for industrial clusters in Saurashtra and the Mumbai metropolitan area, contributing to a net reduction in vehicular emissions and congestion.

Both projects are slated for phased completion within the next five years, with design and construction emphasising long-term operational sustainability. The expansion aligns with national objectives to modernise critical transport infrastructure, improve regional accessibility, and support inclusive economic growth.

Gujarat Maharashtra Railways Approve Rs 2781 Crore Two Multitracking Projects Boost Connectivity

The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 2,781 crore investment in two major railway expansion projects across Gujarat and Maharashtra, aimed at strengthening connectivity for

[149,146,152,147,148
684,3722,10243,31707,352,1157,30520,30793,1003,1060,31708,204
post-82773","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-infrastructure","category-latest","category-mmr","category-news","category-urban-news","tag-freight-transport","tag-gujarat","tag-india-rail-projects","tag-industrial-logistics","tag-infrastructure-development","tag-maharashtra","tag-mumbai-suburban-network","tag-net-zero-transport","tag-passenger-convenience","tag-railway-expansion","tag-saurashtra-connectivity","tag-sustainable-cities
["GET
