Bengaluru is witnessing a major water supply disruption today as a critical leak was detected in the Cauvery Stage-5 transmission pipeline. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has initiated emergency repairs, affecting multiple city localities from early morning until late evening. Authorities have urged residents to store water in advance and use it judiciously, as the temporary halt is essential to prevent further leakage and ensure long-term stability of the city\u2019s Cauvery water network<\/strong>.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The BWSSB reported that a 3,000 mm diameter transmission pipeline suffered significant damage to a screw valve, resulting in a large-scale water leak. In response, teams were immediately deployed to carry out urgent maintenance work, which is expected to continue from 7 am to 10 pm. Officials emphasised that the disruption is unavoidable and necessary to safeguard the integrity of Bengaluru\u2019s primary water supply system.<\/span>City residents across several localities, including Ananthapura, Doddabettahalli, Chikkabettahalli, Harohalli, Kenchanahalli, Govindapura, Vasudevapura, Manchenahalli, Kattigenahalli, Srinivasapura, Bellahalli, Thirumenahalli, and Chokkanahalli, will experience interrupted water distribution. Suburban and outer areas such as Thanisandra, Horamavu Agara, Kadubeesanahalli, Ullal Sonnenahalli, Turahalli, Ambalipura, Begur, and Bellandur are also affected, reflecting the extensive reach of the Cauvery network and its critical role in Bengaluru\u2019s water security.<\/span><\/h4>\n

A senior BWSSB official explained that repairing the pipeline is essential to prevent further water loss and to restore stable supply for the long term. \u201cThe Cauvery Stage-5 line forms a backbone for the city\u2019s water distribution. Addressing leaks promptly is crucial to maintain uninterrupted service for households and businesses alike,\u201d the official said.<\/span>Urban planners highlighted that the incident underscores the need for resilient and decentralised water infrastructure in rapidly growing cities. Integrating preventive maintenance, advanced leak detection systems, and alternative water sources can mitigate the impact of such disruptions. \u201cBengaluru\u2019s dependence on a single transmission network makes it vulnerable. Residents have been advised to ration stored water and avoid non-essential usage until repairs are completed.
