The innovative structure will integrate a four-lane flyover for vehicular traffic on the first level and a metro rail corridor on the second, marking a strategic step in Pune’s sustainable urban transport development.

A senior PMC official highlighted that the bridge is designed to address chronic congestion on the existing Mundhwa–Kharadi river crossing. “The double-decker bridge will allow vehicles to move at speeds up to 80 km per hour and pass alongside the current river bridge, significantly improving commute times,” the official said. The project includes an extensive set of supporting structures, including slip roads, footpaths, retaining walls, and a stormwater management system that channels runoff from the grade separator into the river. Utilities affected by construction will be relocated, and a single integrated pier will support both the flyover and the planned Ramwadi–Swargate metro line, with metro-related expenses reimbursed by Pune Metro authorities.

Spanning 796 metres in length, the bridge will feature a 148-metre approach on the Hadapsar side and a 136-metre approach on the Kharadi side. The carriageway will provide 1.5-metre-wide lanes for vehicles, designed to integrate seamlessly with existing roads, including the Bund Garden–Mundhwa River Road corridor near the old Mundhwa Bridge. Urban planners note that the project aligns with Pune’s broader vision of combining road infrastructure with mass transit to create sustainable, multi-modal urban mobility solutions. By integrating metro transit into the bridge design, the PMC aims to reduce vehicular congestion while promoting public transport adoption. “Projects like this demonstrate how smart infrastructure can provide long-term efficiency and equity in urban mobility,” an urban transport expert said.

Kharadi is rapidly emerging as an IT and commercial hub, while Hadapsar hosts industrial and residential developments. The bridge is expected to accommodate the increasing commuter flow between these areas, supporting Pune’s economic growth and reducing travel-related emissions. Construction is anticipated to proceed in coordination with Pune Metro, ensuring adherence to engineering standards and sustainable design practices. Once completed, the bridge will serve as a model for integrating multi-level transit infrastructure in rapidly urbanising Indian cities, balancing capacity expansion with environmental responsibility.

Pune PMC Approves Rs 133 Crore Double Decker Bridge Connecting Hadapsar Kharadi

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to construct a Rs 133 crore double-decker bridge over the Mula-Mutha River, aiming to enhance connectivity between

[147,148
17604,12137,30591,12783,33050,33873,285,3942,30681,361,2683,227
post-85720","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-urban-news","tag-city-connectivity","tag-double-decker-bridge","tag-hadapsar","tag-kharadi","tag-mula-mutha-river","tag-multi-modal-infrastructure","tag-pune","tag-pune-metro","tag-smart-urban-planning","tag-sustainable-transport","tag-traffic-decongestion","tag-urban-mobility
["GET
