The grand Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, one of the world’s largest human gatherings, a major initiative is being launched to enhance local transport for the millions of devotees expected to visit Prayagraj. Starting December 15, app-based booking services for e-rickshaws and e-autos will be available through popular platforms like Ola and Uber. This initiative aims to provide a safe, affordable, and eco-friendly transport option while addressing issues like arbitrary fare charges.

Comfy E Mobility, a UP-based startup recognized by Startup India, is leading the effort, launching a fleet of 300 e-rickshaws equipped with GPRS tracking and covered seating. The e-vehicles will be available at strategic locations such as railway stations, bus stands, airports, and hotels. The project is part of a larger push by the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure a more sustainable and environmentally friendly Maha Kumbh.

The app-based service promises to offer passengers transparency and affordability, with fares based on a pre-determined per-km rate. This will prevent unexpected fare hikes often seen with traditional transport options. All e-vehicle drivers will undergo rigorous training to ensure they are courteous and provide a positive experience, including language assistance via Google Voice to communicate effectively with international visitors. A significant focus of the initiative is safety and convenience, particularly for female devotees. As part of this, around 30 to 40 “pink taxis” – a fleet of female-driven taxis – will be operational from the start. This measure ensures safer travel options for women during the event, while also promoting empowerment. No commission will be charged to the e-vehicle drivers, making the service more affordable for passengers while providing an opportunity for local drivers to earn a livelihood. This initiative also aligns with the Yogi government’s vision of promoting green, sustainable transport during the event.

Additionally, with the Maha Kumbh Mela set to draw an estimated 45 crore devotees, the Uttar Pradesh government has strengthened transport infrastructure, including 7,000 buses, 550 shuttle buses, and additional trains to manage the large influx of visitors. The formation of a new Maha Kumbh Mela district in Prayagraj aims to streamline administrative processes and ensure smooth event management. This eco-friendly transport initiative serves as a pilot project for urban mobility, with plans to extend it to other cities in Uttar Pradesh after the Kumbh. By reducing air pollution and creating local jobs, it ensures that the 2025 Maha Kumbh will be both memorable and sustainable.
